LMIA

What is an LMIA?

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document released by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to examine the impact of foreign workers on the Canadian labour market.

Before hiring Foreign Workers from specific countries, a business must file an LMIA to establish that they have not been successful in hiring a local worker during the recruitment process.

Remember that not everyone requires an LMIA.

  • LMIA applications must be submitted by an employer, not the employee.
  • There are two LMIA streams: high-wage and low-wage workers.
  • LMIA regulations vary depending on the province and the job.
